YOUNGSTers at a South Tyneside school passed their way to sporting success at a recent competition.

Year Four pupils from Marine Park Primary, South Shields, put their rugby skills to the test to finally lift the tournament trophy. The borough-wide competition, held at Harton Technology College last week, was run by top North-East rugby club Newcastle Falcons, and saw the youngsters take on pupils from other schools in South Tyneside.

As part of competition, the youngsters, aged eight and nine, were given five weeks of training by the Falcons to help them prepare. The sessions for the Marine Park Primary School youngsters were held at Ocean Road Community Centre, in South Shields.

Christopher Mackley, PE co-ordinator at the school, in Hatfield Square, South Shields, said: “The children have all worked extremely hard and listened intently to what the coaches had to say during their training.
“It was great to see what they had learned being put into practice at the tournament.
“We were able to take full advantage of this exciting opportunity because of the vital schools sports funding.
“This funding has had a huge impact and given us the possibility of taking up a wider range of sports activities.
“Through this funding we have attained the gold kitemark for PE – which is a nationally-accredited award.”
